Ondrej

I've spent 15 years making cars and the parts that go into them, from engines at Cummins to carbon fibre bodies at McLaren. Today I lead an Innovation Center in Riyadh, helping build a car company from scratch. Below is the work, with numbers where I can share them.

Speedtail: the full carbon fibre body, on time and to spec

Composites Supplier Quality Engineer, contract
106cars built
403 km/htop speed
$750Mvehicle programme budget

The Speedtail is McLaren's three-seat hypercar, the fastest road car the company had built, with a carbon fibre monocoque and a price of over $2M per car. I owned supplier quality for the complete composite body in white and led its delivery into McLaren.

Day to day that meant production part approval (PPAP) for every component, 8D investigations and fixes once series production started, and pushing new engineering materials through approval at the suppliers.

Launching the Evoque and Discovery Sport with 80% fewer stop-ships

Launch Engineer, New Model Programmes
63commodities through engineering change, Evoque launch
−80%stop-ships, UK, Brazil and India plants
−75%related cost
+25%vendor performance afterwards

On the Range Rover Evoque launch I got engineering changes into 63 body, chassis, powertrain and electrical commodities on time. On the shared Evoque and Discovery Sport platform I set up one common containment process across the plants, which cut stop-ships by 80%.

I also ran the cubing quality audits, which reached a zero score at production prove-out and the highest PSW rate Halewood had seen. The Discovery Sport went on to win Auto Express Compact SUV of the Year in 2015.

23 supplier sites, every part signed off on time

Site Engineer, Supplier Technical Assistance
23supplier sites
100%on-time PPAP sign-off
0stop-ships or recalls
20SQA engineers trained for Nitra

Promoted to site engineer, I covered 23 supplier sites for all JLR vehicles and got every part approval signed off on time, with no stop-ships or recalls from those suppliers.

I also rebuilt the training programme for the 20 supplier quality engineers and managers who would run the new plant in Nitra, Slovakia. Their performance came in up to 30% above forecast.

Turning around a composites engineering department

Technical Manager, reporting to the CEO
52people: 32 engineers, 20 operators
−15%cost on a €3M tool-shop budget
+30%in-house tooling in 6 months
8% → 2%staff turnover in 6 months

c2i makes carbon fibre parts for premium car makers. I ran product and process development and the tool shop, with five CNC machines and six assembly stations.

The biggest change was people, not machines. Training plans and team work brought turnover from 8% down to 2% in half a year. I also moderated FMEAs for the Porsche Speedster and BMW M4 programmes.

Euro VI emissions systems for DAF and Scania, 10% under budget

Build Coordinator and Readiness Leader, then Test Engineer
3customer plants launched
€16Moperating budget
50people at peak
−10%under budget, on schedule

My first job. I coordinated manufacturing, purchasing and engineering readiness for the Euro VI heavy-duty emissions launch at three customer plants, and moved the build from a prototype facility in France to serial production in the Netherlands without the customers noticing.

Later I planned up to four engine validation tests a day as a test engineer.

Running my own composites business, and closing it

Founder and owner
Carbon fibre side intake fitted to a sports car

A small company designing and making composite car parts, with a focus on natural fibres, custom materials and recycling composites. It taught me more about cash flow and customers in six months than any corporate role had.

I closed it in 2023 when I moved to Riyadh.

Building innovation inside a new car company

Innovation Center Senior Manager

Starting a car company from zero means building the processes as well as the product. My first year was the vehicle development process and programme timing. Since 2024 I've led the Innovation Center: technology scouting, partnerships with research institutions, AI and R&D.

Details of current work stay internal.

Beyond work

Athlete at core

Sport keeps me honest. You can't fake the training, and the same goes for most things worth building.

Qualified in Muscat in February. Self-coached, trained around a full-time job and the Riyadh heat. Best swim I've had, and a run that came apart in the last hour.

Notes

What I'm thinking about

Short pieces, mostly from LinkedIn. New ones every couple of weeks.

Quick wins need to point somewhere

Most innovation ideas don't die because they're bad. They die because they're not connected to anything. Start with vision, mission, values and pillars, then every project has a reason to exist.

Seeing a pedestrian is easy. Predicting them is the hard bit.

Notes from a KACST and MIT workshop on autonomous driving, and why research, universities and industry need to be in the same room.
